Tintin in the Congo is suddenly surrounded in controversy. Consequently its retail price has appreciated ten times overnight.

This is an early work by Herge, one in which Tintin's ethical stance on things tends to be a bit skew -wiff. Some say it contains racial discrimination and mistreatment of animals. This perhaps arises due to scenes like that in which Tintin drills a hole in a Rhinoserous and plants a stick of dynamite in its hide and subsequently blows up the rhino!

This episode is in stark contrast to the well deserved reputation theTintin series has for being culturally respectful and for not discriminating at all. This book 'Tintin in the Congo' then is the exception to the rule. For that reason most bookstores have taken it out of the childrens section - its still for sale, but not as a childrens book.

Tintin's friend Chang
In real life Herge's friend Chang Chong Chen from China was the basis for Tintins friend Chang, who he meets when he rescues Chang from a flooded river in the orient. Amazingly Herge was able to track down his long lost friend Chang who he hadn't seen since his youth and amid massive media hype the two old men in their twilight years reunited again in an airport lobby in europe.
